Working Together as a Family

Posted on 15th July 2025

When a child enters residential care, it doesn’t mean that family stops being important — far from it. At Nwando Care, we believe families remain central to a child’s progress and identity, regardless of the circumstances that led to the placement.

We begin by listening. Every family’s journey is unique. You may be feeling guilt, sadness, confusion or even relief. You may have experienced breakdowns in communication or had difficult experiences with professionals in the past. We don’t judge — we start where you are.

From the very beginning, you’ll be involved in the planning process. We want to know what matters to your child — not just their diagnosis or their risk history, but what makes them smile, what helps them calm down, what they’re proud of. Your insight shapes the way we work.

You’ll meet the team early on. You’ll know who your child’s keyworker is, and who to contact for updates. We’ll agree how often we speak, what works for you, and how best to keep in touch. Whether it’s weekly calls, monthly reports or video check-ins, we’ll tailor it to your preferences.

Family contact is more than a scheduled visit. We support birthdays, cultural and religious celebrations, shared outings and remote video calls. If there have been tensions in the past, we work with you and social workers to rebuild safe, supported contact — always led by your child’s readiness.

You’ll be invited to all care planning meetings, including Looked After Child reviews, EHCP discussions, and behaviour support planning. Your views and experience will be considered and recorded. We’ll never exclude you from decisions that affect your child’s life.

Importantly, we see family involvement as a strength. Children are more likely to thrive when their parents, carers or siblings are engaged in a meaningful way — even if they’re not currently living together. We’re here to nurture that connection.

Working together doesn’t just support the child — it supports you, too. We’re committed to transparency, respect and long-term relationships. Because when families and providers stand together, children do better.
