Background

I’ve been a Lead Care Coordinator at Nwando Care for over five years, working directly with clients, families, and health professionals to ensure that the care we deliver is safe, person-centred, and responsive to complex needs. One of the most rewarding examples of our work involved a bariatric client supported in the Barnet area.

Delivering Tailored Support

This client required daily personal care and support with safe transfers, which included the use of hoisting equipment. Our team was responsible for coordinating this care and ensuring all staff were trained and confident in manual handling procedures, especially given the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the client’s needs.

When concerns were raised about the suitability and safety of the client’s existing equipment, we worked quickly and collaboratively with the Barnet Occupational Therapy (OT) team and Social Care Direct to arrange multiple reviews. As a result, new equipment was sourced on two separate occasions to better meet the client’s needs—moving from a sling hoist to a full-body hoist.

Maintaining Dignity and Independence

The client expressed concerns that the full-body hoist diminished her sense of independence, especially when supported by family members outside of carer hours. We respected this view and supported a solution that allowed her husband to continue using the original hoist at his own risk, while our carers used the full-body hoist during commissioned hours to ensure staff safety.

As a bariatric client, issues around equipment can feel deeply personal. We handled this with great sensitivity—ensuring the client’s dignity was protected throughout, and that her voice remained central to the care planning process.

Integrated Working with Professionals

Throughout the year, I personally attended six joint meetings with the client’s social worker and OT. These sessions allowed us to:

Coordinate reviews and equipment replacements

Ensure staff training aligned with the OT’s instructions

Co-produce a care plan that was safe, realistic, and empowering

By keeping communication open and professional across teams, we helped avoid unnecessary hospital admissions or bed-bound care, which the client was keen to avoid.

Improved manual handling safety, leading to fewer staff complaints or injuries

Reduced service incidents and a drop in the number of additional reviews required

Improved consistency, with carers hand-picked based on the client’s preferences and their ability to work confidently with the equipment
